Press Home key to go to the first image. Press End key to go to the last image. Press 1,2,3,… or 0 key to zoom the image to 100 %, 200 %, 300 %,… 1000 %. Press A or / key to display the image in actual size. Press B or * key to display the image in best fit within the current window or screen area.

Image editing and viewer programs usually have their own thumbnail browser. I use Irfanview .. and the last time I looked - it worked well in Vista. Just a wild guess .. turn off the thumbnails .. play w awhile .. reboot and turn the thumbnails back on. Seems like this is a common problem in Vista .. Maybe some more googling might help.
re: locking the thumbnail style There is a format lock, a couple of ways to do it. View -> folder formats -> format lock or Folder formats -> images or Customize -> commands -> type "lock" -> drag and drop the lock button to your toolbar somewhere. RE: slideshow It has hotkeys. Spacebar and mousewheel.
